Far, a day ago, a lecture precedes\r\na new law, a gallery of men chat,\r\ninterests on hand, women behind.\r\n\r\nTaught them how to walk but silent \r\nabout how magnets repel, attract, \r\na relationship broken in who knew\r\nbetter, what kind of measure tipped \r\nthe cup forward, backward. Steel \r\nis stroked against magnetic iron\r\nuntil it becomes one, why couldn’t \r\nwe be the mothers of knowledge \r\nwhile its fathers went to sleep? \r\n\r\nPulled against forces that struggle\r\nto maintain an idea afloat, women\r\nbrushed against each other until \r\nthey became magnetic too, uniting \r\ntheir voices was their final blow. \r\n\r\nTied to natural law, men convinced\r\nus there’s justice in a common law \r\nforgetful of being as the beautiful.\r\n\r\n“Life, liberty, property” remains \r\nan echo of the commitment to joy \r\nbut what is joy without the good,\r\nthe beautiful and cousin sublime?\r\nWere we ever free? Is freedom to\r\nwill power our failed contract?  \r\n\r\nIrises’ thoughts could redefine \r\nnatural law where the freedom \r\nis the liberation from fantasy,\r\nnot the freedom to want a want\r\nbut to stay where I don't want\r\nbecause I've seen why it's true. \r\n\r\nWhen that's not enough, realism \r\nof compassion changes the quō,\r\nan outward direction of attention \r\nto what is, as it is, the freedom\r\nto love, not to will but being,\r\nprocesses of gradual maturity.  \r\n\r\nThe weak become the strongest \r\nas fear can’t misalign a core\r\nliberated from fictions sold.\r\n\r\nDon’t dismiss the ones hidden\r\nin libraries, setting a wake-up\r\ndong. A magnetic flux outgrows\r\nan antique compass of morality\r\nthat can't solve our troubles. \r\n\r\nIrises, stand up! Indivisibly, \r\ndeliberately liberated show\r\nus how fantasy doesn't let us \r\nbe aimant, loving stones, 爱石.  \r\n\r\n<\/pre>\n
Note: 磁铁 (cí tiě) is the correct translation in Mandarin for a magnet. According to Joseph Needham in the book Science and Civilisation in China, the concept of a loving magnet comes from the Ancient Chinese 慈石, which now would refer to magnetite (cí shí). I took the literal translation: 爱石 to describe the magnet as a loving stone. 爱 is pronounced ai (ài) pronounced as “I” and 石 is pronounced “she” which references the female aspect of the poem (shí). The end of the poem breaks down the object-subject dictum by saying I|SHE, loving stone, together, magnetized, alluding to a balance between the reader and receiver, female and male, the object and subject, etc. I|SHE would be analogous to intersubjectivity, a balance of fluxes. When I am talking about irises’ thoughts, I am alluding the philosopher Iris Murdoch as an iris of wisdom.<\/div>\n
